How Do You Become a Better Gamer?

Whether you are a veteran gamer who has been playing a title for several years or you are a newbie trying to make sense of a game title, these tips will help you become a better gamer overall.

I’ve broken them down into several sections so that you can pick which area is most applicable to you and focus primarily on those tips while still reading the others. The key is to emphasize the tips that make the most sense in your circumstance, so you can level up your game sooner rather than later.

Tips for the New Gamer

If you’re fairly new to video games, or you’re playing a brand new game and are having a tough time, these tips are for you. To be a better gamer, keep the following in mind.

Start With the Right Accessories

To get the full experience of the game that you are playing, it’s really important to get the best-quality hardware accessories. If you don’t already have an awesome CPU and monitor, there’s no better time than now to invest in top-notch, high-quality hardware accessories.

The good news is that you don’t have to buy all of these all at once. You can buy them in installments.

First, invest in the monitor because this is the most important piece of hardware. After all, you interact with the game through its graphics. If you have a crappy monitor, it’s going to set back your experience.

From there, invest in your CPU, and the rest should fall in line. You can go to your graphics card, then the memory, and so on and so forth.

Download Steam

Almost all PC gamers have Steam on their PC. Steam is an amazing online gaming platform where you can get access to almost all games coded for the PC. It offers a stunning selection regardless of the game category or niche you’re into.

On top of that, you can access a very robust database of user-written reviews. These are legit. They’re not fake. They’re not written under some sort of pressure. So if you want to make sure that you are buying the right game and are not wasting your time, you should download and install Steam.

Get Comfortable

It’s important to be physically comfortable when you’re gaming. To become a better gamer, you have to be engaged to the point that you can figure out the game and master it. It’s hard to do this if you’re physically uncomfortable.

Maybe you’re crouched over, or your chair isn’t steady. You can make all those issues go away by getting a really comfortable and high-quality gaming chair. Please understand that you will be sitting and playing for hours on end. You might as well be comfortable doing it.

To make sure that you can safely lean back and relax, make sure that the chair comes complete with proper arm and back support.

Keep Your PC Clean

To avoid damage to your gameplaying hardware, clean out any dust particles and sticky residue. Do this on a regular basis.

You don’t have to go overboard. Any moist cloth will do. Just handle your hardware with care. Make sure that there’s no extra water that might get into the electronics.

Get a Reddit Account

I can’t emphasize this enough. Reddit has saved my life and countless hours many times when it comes to video games.

Join gaming communities that are specifically tailored for the game title that you’re playing. Look for questions that you need to be answered. Chances are, people have asked them in the past. Look at the answer, try them out in the game, and if your experience is different, be sure to post about it on the subreddit so that people can benefit from your experience.

Try New Things

When you are in a game, please understand that this is not a job. You’re not getting paid to do this as quickly as possible. There’s no bonus for completion.

Instead, you’re doing this to challenge yourself. You’re doing it to enjoy yourself in an alternative realm. So don’t be afraid to explore. Mix and match, slice and dice, and mix things up.

What’s important is that you come into this with a great sense of curiosity and adventure. Again, this is not a job. This is a game, so feel free to explore. Be curious. Feed your hunger for new knowledge, and push your creativity to the limit.

Explore Mods

If a game is a hit and the developer allows for mods, you best believe that there will be a lot of user-created modifications. So explore the different mods out there for the game that you are enjoying. Look at their reviews. Scan them for viruses to make sure that the mods are legit.

Install the mods so that you can experience the game in a different way. Maybe these mods make the game more organized or look better. Whatever the case may be, check the Internet for mods and see what they do.

If they line up with what you’re looking for, try out these mods. If anything, you get to see the game from a new perspective.

Becoming a Better Gamer

Becoming a better gamer means that you focus on the benefits of playing video games. You’re not just poking around and seeing what will happen. At the back of your mind, you know that if you play video games, it can actually benefit you in a wide range of ways.

So what’s in it for you? How do you stand to gain from playing hour after hour of games?

Well, properly designed games can improve your coordination, develop your problem-solving skills, enhance your memory, as well as level up your social skills.

You also learn the value of teamwork and maximizing your use of scarce resources. You also learn how to use your creativity to solve problems and not give up the first time a challenge appears.

How Do You Become a Better Gamer?

The first thing that you need to do is focus on your enjoyment of the game while being strategic at the back of your head. These two go hand-in-hand. They’re not like water and oil. They can mix.

Once you understand what your goals are, experiment and use your creativity so that you keep leveling up. Playing games at higher levels makes you a better gamer. You learn how to set goals, and you achieve them. The more goals you set, the more confident you become as you knock them out.

This can carry over to your “real world” life.

Characteristics of a Better Gamer

So what does a better gamer look like? How do they perform and carry themselves? Well, look for the following qualities.

Patience

You know that practice takes time, and practice makes perfect. You also know that things are never perfect the first time you try them. In fact, in many cases, the first thousand times you try something, things simply don’t pan out. You understand this, and you accept it. By doing so, you allow yourself to grow.

This is the kind of patience that you will need that will help you get on the fast track to improvement. Make no mistake. A better gamer is not born overnight.

You find the time to play

By knowing your priorities and taking care of your responsibilities first, you find the time to enjoy a game. Every single minute you find yourself in the game is well-earned. You are not sacrificing something more important for your game time.

This enables you to become more efficient and operate at peak efficiency in many other areas of your life.

Practice

When you are trying to master a game, give 100% of your focus. This will enable you to climb divisions, get on the leaderboard, and – most importantly – it sets you up to learn from your mistakes.

At the end of the day, even if you are playing a long-established game with a global community in the tens of millions, you still have to make your way through the game. Whatever tips and tricks that people throw at you from all over the world are not going to stick. These things only make sense if you carry them out.

So practice again and again. And learn from your mistakes.

Watch the Pros

If you really want to become a better gamer, don’t be afraid to seek help. The good news is you don’t have to go through some sort of one-on-one coaching. You can just go to the streaming channels or YouTube channels of the pro gamer that is handling that title that you’re interested in and figure out how they deal with the challenges that you’re facing in the game.

This involves a lot of replay analysis. Take a look at how they handle a problem, and then replay them again and again until you learn the basics. Now, apply it to what you’re doing.

If you get it right, then you move on to the next stage. If you’re still screwed up, keep going through the replays or check other pros.

Try Playing in Tournaments

Find a team with the same goal as you and practice teamwork and communication. Participate in tournaments and see how far your team goes. The most important part of all of this is that you learn from each other. That is the best benefit from tournament play.

You may not necessarily make it all the way to the top, but if you allow yourself to learn from each other, you have already won.

Improve Your Communications

To become a better communicator, you just need to shut up. Seriously. Learn how to listen.

Once you understand what people are trying to get across to you, you can then have a better idea of what the proper feedback is. It all boils down to the decision to become a good listener.

This doesn’t happen overnight. You definitely have to set your ego aside. Let’s face it: a lot of us have this part of us that thinks that we already know what the answers are. You need to put that on mute and allow yourself to listen.

Be in the Right Mindset

If you believe that something is doable, chances are you will be able to do it. If you believe that something can be broken down into easier to chew and figure out parts, chances are you will be able to succeed with that goal.

You have to understand that what you choose to assume and expect ultimately impacts your experiences. Your “mental software” determines how you process inputs.

Even if you’re a very good listener, if you have the wrong mindset, you’ve just wasted your time listening to that feedback because you don’t know what to do with it. So you should have the right mindset. You have to say to yourself that things are doable.

“These challenges can be overcome. I have what it takes, and I am going to give myself permission to try and try and learn different approaches until I solve the puzzle, so I can level up to the next game and deal with the challenges as they appear on that level and the level after them.”

Focus

The interesting thing about video games is that they get blamed for people’s short attention span. But, the truth is, if you want to have a successful gaming experience, you need to focus.

You need to know what your weaknesses are and work around them. You need to know the patterns of how you handle a situation in a game and what the consequences are. Once you see a pattern, you can choose a different path.

You can break things down, mix and match, and slice and dice until you get to the outcome that you are looking for.

At the end of the day, it’s all about emotion management. Sometimes, games can cause a tremendous amount of frustration and guilt. After all, you’re spending time playing games instead of something else.

Calm down. Learn how to deal with your emotions. Learn to think clearly through that emotional fog. Feel and understand the process your emotions have on your decisions.

If you’re not happy with the decisions, choose to interact with your emotions in a different way, so your choices lead to better outcomes.
